This function figures strongly in the expository narrative, a
messenger's report and the teichoscopy. For an illustration of the use
of this function I will take a closer look at Poor thing5.4 in which the referential function dominates both the
external and internal communication systems. I'll discuss the structure
of the verbal communication in this song in the next
chapter.
