Methodology

The first thing I shall do, is to make an inventarization of the differing forms of verbal communication. I do this by using a book on the analysis of drama by Pfister1.1. In this book Pfister makes a thorough study of drama in many aspects. Unfortunately he does not include musical theater in this otherwise comprehensive study. One of my tasks was to investigate how music is used in the various verbal communication structures. In the penultimate chapter I shall make analyses of some of the more important numbers from Sweeney Todd. In this studies I shall investigate the relationship between the musical and the verbal communication structure.

In chapter 4 I will try to construct a working definition of drama, in which verbal communication can take its rightful place.

In chapter 2 and 3 I will provide you with some background information concerning the plot of the musical, the original play and the historical truth behind this story.

Finally in the chapter 6 the whole theoretical that has been constructed in the previous chapter is used to analyze some songs from the show. This chapter is of course followed by a conclusion in chapter 7.
